Chapter 13
The next morning, Stephano went into action. He couldn’t just wait for information to come to him. It was better to seek it out. While Kyra slept, he did some online research. The sun hadn’t crested the mountains yet, and it felt good to get an early start.
Possibly Troy was sleeping too, secure in his plan. Whatever it was. And that might be his blind spot: overconfidence. Stephano had seen it before. An attacker like Troy, thinking he has control, gets lazy. Confident with his assumed strength, his arrogance would be his undoing.
Stephano saw no reason that Troy should be different than other men with overblown egos. If anything, he would be more inclined to think he was invincible. Through bullying, the man was used to getting his way. And that could be the prelude to his fall, because he wouldn’t see it coming.
At least, that was what Stephano intended to make happen. He needed to gain tactical information, and use it swiftly. If Troy had no warning of the tenuousness of his position, it would be an advantage. And any edge would be useful.
With darkness still filling the windows, Stephano tapped away on his laptop. He wasn’t sure what he was searching for. The biggest issue was where to begin. It could be days before he heard from Abe or Curtis. And that might be too late. If Troy was already in motion, then Stephano needed a good defense.
Even more¸ he needed an offense. Knowledge was power. And if he could figure out what Troy had in mind, then he could thwart him. Stephano was highly motivated. He had fallen in love with Kyra. What had originally been his natural male instinct to protect a woman in trouble had become more.
Now he defended the woman he loved. Any attack by Troy, he took personally. If any harm came to Kyra, the scumbag ex-boyfriend would suffer the consequences. The mere idea of such caused rage to surge through Stephano’s veins.
The art world provided a dim clue. Troy had donated a painting, one that repulsed Kyra. Yet, in doing so, he’d revealed one fact. Troy was involved with art, enough to have possession of such a valuable item. And the restaurant owner had met Laurentz Bauer at Art Basel.
Which meant that Troy’s uncle was entrenched in the art scene as well. There remained the question of how that was connected to Kyra. Or maybe it was all a clever decoy. And, after all, Troy was just out to get her back. To make her pay for embarrassing him so long ago.
Because dumping him after that escapade in Germany was surely demeaning. And that is not something an abuser tolerates. Stephano knew the type. Such a man would prefer that no man have Kyra if he couldn’t.
Which put Stephano in the line of fire. Kyra was right about that. But that was just how it was. If he had to stand between the woman he loved and her aggressor, he would do so.
